Rivets C.C. 7th June 1998
By Tim Greenwood
With Kimble involved in a village competition, Hetairoi played another wandering side linked to Kimble instead. With the customary gale blowing over the exposed fields, Hetairoi batted first. John Rolfe and David Oliver added about 40 for the second wicket, although tight bowling restricted the scoring rate and with 20 overs gone the score was about 50. However a fairly rapid 57 from Tim Greenwood, 32 from Alaistair Rolfe and a well crafted 19 no from Gary Fenn brought the score up to 182 for 7 after 44 overs. Tea was its usual feast, the table groaning beneath the weight of sandwiches and remarkable cakes. A storm during tea cut about 10 minutes off the game but that time was not wasted, as our performance over the first five overs indicates....35 for 0 or thereabouts. But with tea settling down both Turnbull and Slade found their line and a classic runout ensured that we were back in the game. Ron performed his usual miracles, his first match of the season looking suspiciously like his tenth, such was his line, flight and guile (enough.. are you related to him or something..Ed.) and the Rivets conspired to reach 164 for 9 when stumps were drawn. A tight match...our batting was strong but their bowling was tight throughout, perhaps revealing the number of their players who play in league team on Saturday. Guy Lambert also bowled tidily; at least in this match he took only male wickets (for explanation see New College report!).
Champagne moment: John Rolfe taking a very sharp chance at midwicket and thereby showing his brother how to catch the ball...(sorry Alaistair...)
